Menno Vos was born in 1958 in Dordrecht, the Netherlands and lives in Apeldoorn since 1990.
He went to school in Dordrecht and during those years he loved to play soccer. Art was not a part of his education. When he was 18 years old, he had his first job. A colleague of him took him to a gallery and showed him paintings and sculptures. He met several artists and became curious about their art and their way of living. Menno has always been interested in other people, other cultures and when he was 20 years old he travelled to the USA for the first time. That was the time that travelling really caught him. Now he says he is a “worldcitizen”.
A few years later, he met his wife Roely: they shared the passion for travelling. In 25 years they travelled to many countries all around the world, and this was a great source of inspiration for Menno.
It started with photography. During his travels he made photos and was especially interested in making a nice composition: colors, light, dark. For almost 7 years he had a stock bureau together with a partner who gave lectures for travel agencies. His photos were published in more than 10 travel magazines in the Netherlands.
In the meantime he moved from Dordrecht to Apeldoorn and worked as a teacher and manager at an Academy. His interest in art was growing. A good friend of Menno brought him in contact with an abstract painter. Menno was fascinated by his art and he offered him a workshop in abstract painting.
The first workshop, in 2013, was a challenge for him. He found it hard to forget all about the things he has to do in his job: work by rules, set goals, make plans. Abstract painting is the opposite of all that, he had to ‘let go´. After the third workshop he was caught by painting. It felt as if a new life started!
Since the workshops Menno painted a lot. In his house, outside on the balcony, and for two years now in his own atelier. He started with acryl and also tried ink. His inspiration are people he meets, images he sees and emotions that he feels while travelling. Menno is always optimistic and a “people-person”: interested in how people live, what they think, where they live. His paintings are the result of his desire to understand people. Full of color, depth and sometimes a bit mysterious. His paintings always come from the heart. They show who he is and that he loves life.
He developed his own style, had several exhibitions in the Netherlands, New York, Las Vegas and this and next years in Turin, Lisboa, Vienna and Miami. He now is member of the artcollective PS20 and one of three owners of a gallery in Apeldoorn. He still combines art with his job at the Academy, but he is looking forward to being a full-timepainter.
